The good news is that it is legal and super easy to get zero waste takeout from most ANY restaurant in California that can serve onto its own reusable plates!! This way you can get your food to eat at home on real plates with real cutlery and not create any trash. Read on to learn how!

In the picture above I am picking up a pizza in as Zero Waste way as possible from Jake's of Sunnyvale -- the pizza goes into an aluminum pizza container I made from two 20" pizza pans. The paired set of aluminum pans then goes into a reusable pizza bag that keeps the pizza warm -- watch out, a fresh pizza makes the aluminum pans very hot (and sterile)! I bike it all home in my covered all purpose bike trailer. I use a clean sheet to line the inside when carrying food.

Here is a sequence of pictures I took at a different pizzeria that show off the pans I use.

I tried to find a couple of pans with a deeper dish but ended up bending the edges of one of these very large pans to create a lid with deeper clearance. I've gotten pizza from 5 different local pizzerias dozens of times in my area and they all are very accommodating and appreciate the business. Now I just need to find a pizzeria that makes a whole wheat pizza from organic ingredients...

While my pizza pickup technique requires some specialized equipment, getting zero waste takeout from most restaurants is really pretty easy. Below is one important tip, one important factor, and three simple options to getting zero waste takeout from just about any restaurant.

Important tip: always call ahead to make sure the restaurant in question can handle your zero waste option even if you have picked up from them before. There is staff turnover and you don't want to be embarrassed or disappointed. This is also a great marketing opportunity for zero waste!

The one important factor is the restaurant MUST NOT be a typical fast food restaurant that only serves into its own disposable containers. A restaurant that normally serves onto its own reusable plates is key plus local restaurants (not chain restaurants) are the best and more accommodating.

The three simple options are:

The restaurant serves its food onto its own plates and puts them on a table where the customer can use utensils and/or their own spatula to transfer the food to their take home reusable containers.

The restaurant takes your reusables and washes them thru its high speed commercial dish washing machine then serves into your containers.

The restaurant has some other safe and cross contamination free mechanism to get food into your container -- like simply dropping it in.

For food other than pizza, we use standard polyethylene quart size deli containers to get take out Chinese, Indian, and others instead of the using disposable cardboard/plastic or disposable plastic clamshell containers. For other restaurants that use clamshell disposable containers, we use a variety of other Tupperware style containers made of polypropylene. Polyethylene and polypropylene plastics are the safest to use with food, don't break easily (like when carrying by bike), easy to clean, and are also somewhat recyclable.

Remember to tell the restaurant you don't want any disposable condiments, napkins, or plasticware. It is amazing how they automatically toss all this trash into their bags. If you do need condiments, bring some small containers to hold these waste free.

Hope you find these tips useful and are able to get zero waste takeout too!

If you like this article, please also visit my Zero Waste website at ZeroW.org and consider joining or donating to the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. Even if you don't bike, they do more to reduce waste than most any other organization around.

December 2020 Update:

I forgot to include links to the laws covering consumer provided containers. Below is the email I sent him at https://govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov40mail/. Alas I could not send along pictures in the form based email submission but here are some pictures from my recent DMV visit.

At the DMV in Santa Clara:

Their lonely and isolated wheel bender rack is flush against a wall so the center section that bends your wheel cannot even be used:

Luckily with COVID there are lots of guards and staff outside at their entrance so they watched my bike next to the front door while I was inside:

Locking my commuter/shopping bike to an outdoor bike rack is a big pain and risky -- it is much easier to roll it inside with me. I tend to only shop where I can bring my bike inside because I bike everywhere and use my bike as my shopping cart. Most places do not have good bike parking.

------------------

Dear Governor Newsom,

Today I bicycled to my local DMV to get a RealID. It is really tough for bicyclists at the DMV. The bicycle rack was in an odd place, badly designed (a wheel-bender rack that was shoved against a wall so that didn't even work), and leaves my bike and all its attachments -- lights, tool bag, pump, speaker, and other necessary attachments -- all exposed to theft. I've had my lights stolen twice after parking my bike at grocery stores. Other people have had their bicycle seats stolen. Do you need to dismantle your car each time you park it?

California DMVs could really benefit from first class bicycle parking like cars get first class parking. The best parking for bikes is to just bring them inside with you -- they are just like a stroller and many people consider their bikes their babies.

The next best are electronic bike lockers like those from BikeLink (https://www.bikelink.org/). Outdoor racks are not that good -- like leaving the doors on your car open all the time while you are parked. Would you do that on a regular basis?

Could you change our California government bicycle policies to let bikes inside as much as possible and when that is not possible make sure bicycles have bike lockers to park in at all our California state offices?

Cars carry tons of heavy metal to keep them and their contents secure. This wastes megatons of fuel and creates megatons of CO2 powering climate change. Bikes are super efficient and prevent climate change but lack safe and secure weatherproof parking at most locations.

We need to shift people away from cars and providing safe bike parking would help. Many people still need drivers licenses for identification purposes and need to visit DMVs.

So can you make bike parking weatherproof, safe and secure for bicyclists at DMV offices? And big enough to fit all sorts of bikes including those with panniers that carry stuff people need? Then do this for all other state offices too.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Tim
Tim Oeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11950416117686776062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7715358100843711353.post-69883513231013786262020-07-27T00:35:00.006-07:002020-07-27T09:40:57.035-07:00Would you like to be $2 Million Richer?

How would you like to be a millionaire? One way to help you get there is to save money. If you are a couple who is thinking of having 2 kids and 2 cars here are two big ways to reduce your costs.

The USDA recently calculated that the average child in the US would cost $233,610 to raise from 0 to age 17. This does not include college costs. College costs can vary widely (community colleges are a great deal) but if you send your kid to a private college this can easily cost $50,000 to $70.000 a year or $200,000 to $280,000 for 4 years.

So if a young couple chooses NOT to have two children, they could save roughly $1 million!

Now on the car front, AAA recently calculated that the average cost of car ownership in the US is $9282 per year. That comes to $557,000 per car over a lifetime of car ownership (say about 60 years). So if a young couple decides to forgo owning two cars and use bicycles to get around instead they will save about $1.1 million!

Combine the savings from deciding not to have kids and not to have cars and you can save about $2.1 million US dollars.

The savings don't stop there either. Bringing a kid into this world has by far the biggest impact on climate change and resource use of any choice you can make. Choosing to bicycle instead of drive comes in as the second biggest impact even though it is a fraction of not having a child.

So if you are so inclined, you can both help save the world as well as save yourself a lot of money that you can use for other things by not having kids and not having cars. Hope this makes you think a bit.

We all like to accomplish more for less thus the popularity of “Kill 2 Birds With One Stone”.

What if there was a simple action you could take to accomplish 34 things all at the same time (and save dozens of birds)? Would you jump at the chance? I hope so!

You can accomplish 34 beneficial things just by bicycling (instead of using a motor vehicle):

Increase happiness - it’s fun!

Reduce climate change from fossil fuel C02 AND fossil methane.

Reduce road congestion.

Reduce road repair.

Reduce space needed for roads.

Reduce space needed for parking.

Reduce your taxes.

Reduce other people’s taxes.

Reduce insurance costs.

Reduce transportation purchase costs.

Reduce transportation maintenance costs.

Reduce transportation fuel costs.

Reduce registration & licensing costs.

Reduce obesity & waistlines.

Reduce health care costs.

Reduce health insurance costs.

Reduce people dying from motor vehicle crashes.

Reduce animals (and birds!) dying from motor vehicle crashes.

Reduce property damage from motor vehicle crashes.

Reduce air pollution from burning fuel.

Reduce particulate pollution from brake and tire wear.

Reduce noise pollution.

Reduce waste & trash.

Reduce resource consumption (cars take tons of resources compared to bikes).

Say “Hi!” to more people -- meeting your neighbors and others.

Be in touch with nature.

Exercise and live longer.

Improve mental health.

Get free drugs - exercise endorphins are wonderful!

Enjoy food more. Ride to eat, eat to ride.

Increase safety.

Increase equity. Everyone benefits from bicycling, from the poorest to the richest regardless of race, religion, or creed.

Save our world.

Get you where you need to go.

Bicycling is the safest and most efficient form of transportation known to man. By bicycling instead of driving a car for a lifetime, a typical American can save about $1,000,000 (in 2020 dollars).

So what do you say? Are you ready to bicycle?

Just hop on your bike and do it! Need to carry stuff? Pop it on your bike or get a bike trailer.

I can carry about twice as much stuff with my bike than I can in a Subaru Forester.

For examples of how others carry a lot with their bikes, check out what some customers of Bikes At Work haul around.

Also support your local bicycle coalition (like Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition), your state bicycle coalition (like Calbike), and national organizations (like League of American Bicyclists) that make bicycling safer for everyone everywhere all the time in any weather. Donating to bicycling nonprofits is one of the most efficient ways to save our world -- by enabling more people to bicycle safely and accomplish these 34 wins.

Sun Tzu’s The Art of War: “Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a thousand battles without disaster."

Enemy #1 these days is COVID-19. While it is very contagious, we know quite a bit about COVID-19 and this can help us determine zero waste ways to defeat it in the thousands of battles we face over the coming months and possibly years.

What we know about our enemy:

Soap and water kill it in ~20 seconds and this works better than hand sanitizers.

Sitting on porous surfaces for 1 day at room temperature kills it.

Sitting on plastic or stainless steel for 3 days at room temperature kills it.

It can last in the air for a few hours but then it dies.

Dilution works against COVID-19 as the number of viruses (“troops”) landing on you matters. That is why being outside is so safe if we maintain distance - our huge atmosphere blows it away and dilutes it so it dies off before it can land on anyone else. Indoors near others is much more dangerous.

Higher temperatures kill it. At 56C (133F) coronavirus lasts only 15 minutes. Higher temperatures (like from cooking) kill it even faster.

We also need to know ourselves. The human body is amazing and has many defenses even if we may not have antibodies for COVID-19 yet.

What we know about ourselves:

Our skin naturally kills viruses and COVID-19 cannot penetrate unbroken skin. It needs to get inside us through our eyes, nose, or mouth.

Nose hair helps stop particles from entering our body.

Mucous (snot) traps and kills viruses.

All those disposable masks and gloves many of us see littering parking lots are a waste of money and resources when there are good zero waste alternatives (using the above information) to greatly reduce the chances of us getting COVID-19.

Physical distance!

This is the most important thing to do and is emphasized by public health officials. People are where the virus breeds. Touching others, touching shared surfaces, or being near others is the greatest risk. Dilution matters -- the fewer enemy troops on you the better. This is an easy zero wastes step.

Reusable cotton face mask!

While simple washable face masks only slightly impede the virus from getting to you, they greatly reduce the chance of you giving the virus to others. Your face mask stops many droplets from your mouth going out into the air around you and onto surfaces. So if people near you wear masks over their mouth AND nose, this is fantastic and we protect each other! Since your face mask is really for protecting *others* there is no need for you to use a disposable one. Just keep yours and wash it periodically.

Disposable N95 masks (which are very hard to use correctly) and surgical masks are not needed by regular citizens and should be saved for health care workers who really do need them as they work in much more dangerous environments.

A jacket and winter gloves!

Gloves can protect you from getting COVID-19 on your skin and then into your eyes, nose, or mouth but you need to handle the gloves correctly for this to work.

Start by wearing a jacket and winter or other stiff gloves and then stuffing your hands into your jacket pockets. Take your gloves off while still in the pockets by squeezing through your jacket from inside each pocket so you can pull the glove off while keeping it in your pocket. To put the gloves back on, jam your hands back into your gloves while not touching the outside of your gloves. Winter gloves are easier to get on and off as they are stiff and not flimsy. No need to disinfect the gloves as they just stay in your jacket pockets and the virus dies in a day if they are cloth gloves or 3 days if they are plastic. Plus dilution works in your favor as not much gets transferred to the gloves or from the gloves. If you want to disinfect your gloves and jacket more quickly, just wash them with your regular laundry. Laundry detergents and water are very effective at cleaning and disinfecting.

You must pay close attention to what you touch with your gloves -- this is real work. Only use your gloves to touch surfaces other people touch. Do not use your gloves to touch your phone, face, face mask, or other surfaces you touch with your hands. You must be very mindful when wearing gloves and masks.

When you go out to do essential business, pop your jacket on with the gloves in your pockets and you are all set to pop them on to open doors, push grocery carts, etc. Just remember to take one off to touch your phone and don’t touch your face with your gloves! And store your face mask in a different pocket from your gloves.

Wash your hands regularly!

Even if you take the above precautions, it is very important to wash your hands regularly with soap and water in case some virus snuck past your defenses.

Put things in quarantine and just wait.

If you are super paranoid about the virus on items you have bought or are shipped to you, just put them in a place where they will be undisturbed for 3 days at room temperature and then they should be virus free. Time and temperature do your disinfection work for you in a zero waste way. If items need refrigeration or freezing and are washable then you can wash them off before storing them. Fresh produce can just be stored and then rinsed off with water before you eat it. Don’t use soap on produce because produce absorbs soap and the soap gets inside you when you eat it and that’s not good - rinsing with clean water is good enough. Cooking (high temperature) also makes food safe.

Note that when shopping the virus gets diluted multiple times because most items you buy are not handled much by many people, not that much lands on any given surface, even less gets picked up onto a glove, and much less gets transferred from the glove back to other surfaces. Many experts have pointed out that what you buy in stores is pretty safe without further measures. But a quarantine will do the trick if you want to be super careful.

Being as zero waste as possible will save you money and save us all from the disasters coming after COVID-19. Human's over consumption of resources endangers our future existence. For more see ZeroW.org. Thanks for reading!
On top of that mankind is consuming about twice as much resources as our earth can sustainably provide each year - look up Earth Overshoot Day.

If every household with incomes equal to or greater than mine did what my household has done, we would no longer have a climate emergency. My house is now fully electric with all of its electricity from solar and a bit of wind (no fossil fuels). Our transportation is almost entirely by bicycle and electric car. Our household trash is down to about a quart a month.

We count ourselves blessed to have everything we need to live comfortably. My household and others like us have shown that yes we can live well and still be responsible custodians of our world. We've cut our carbon and trash waste to less than a hundredth of what it was just 10 years ago.

If mankind does not choose to reduce its resource consumption dramatically by either living much more economically or halving the world's current population (!!!), our kids will find that nature is a harsh mistress -- she will force it on them and it won't be pretty. In the end, all equations must balance.

To avoid a disaster for our kids, the onus is on those who are well off (like my household and most of you reading this) to make the difference that will save our world. The wealthy have the luxury to choose to save our world. It is not possible for the poor as they are struggling to survive and just not using that much in resources anyway.

Do your part, go zero waste, bike instead of drive, and eliminate your fossil fuel use. It is very doable. We and others have done it and you can too. We need EVERYONE who is well off to do what we have already done.

Thanks for reading, caring, and doing what it takes to save our world. Our kids are counting on us.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here are some recipes for some basic staples we use frequently. These recipes were adapted and customized from many different sources and our own experience. You may copy and adopt these freely, no license or permission required. You may credit me only if you wish.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm posting these recipes all at once because I'm about to undertake a 3 month bicycle journey across the US to talk with people from coast to coast from San Francisco to Boston about oceans, plastic, climate change, and kids. For more about this ride please see ZeroW.org. My wife was not up for this long a ride and needed these recipes while I'm traveling :-)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Super Easy Syrup
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We use this basic syrup on pancakes, waffles, and to make granola.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ingredients:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 cup water
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2 cups granulated sugar (white or unrefined)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 tablespoon molasses
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 tablespoon maple flavored extract
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Directions:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bring the water, sugar, and molasses to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Take off heat and stir in the maple extract.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Let cool until no longer hot.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Store in a sealed glass mason jar in refrigerator (needs refrigeration since it does not contain preservatives like store purchased varieties). Usually good for a month or two.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Super Easy Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Syrup
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We love ice cream but hate the plastic or plasticized cardboard that commercial ice cream and chocolate syrup come in, so now we are making both ourselves! We did buy an ice cream maker (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006ONQOC/) and cringed at the styrofoam it was packed in, but it makes hundreds of gallons of ice cream 2 quarts at a time preventing hundreds of single use ice cream containers that are trash.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The recurring trash we currently are left with:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. The plastic tops from the reusable Straus Family Creamery organic heavy cream and milk bottles we buy
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Plastic cocoa powder pouches. Once 16 oz pouch is good for about a gallon of chocolate syrup
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Everything else is reusable or recyclable:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Straus Family Creamery bottles get returned to the store for reuse.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Recyclable vanilla extract container (we buy the quart size clear artificial vanilla - much cheaper than real and close enough in taste for our uses).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Recyclable sugar & salt paper packaging.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We bought a 2nd ice cream freezing container so we can make 2 batches of ice cream back to back and reuse our mixing bowl and utensils without washing them. This results in about 1 gallon (4 quarts) of ice cream.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Super Easy Vanilla Ice Cream
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ingredients:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2 cups (1 pint container) organic heavy cream
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 to 1.5 cups organic milk
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2/3 cups organic granulated sugar
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (or to taste)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 tablespoon vanilla extract

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Directions:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Whisk or stir all ingredients together in mixing bowl until sugar is dissolved. (I pour the milk into the pint heavy cream container to wash it out a bit and to use that container as my measuring “cup” -- filling it about 1/2 to 3/4 full).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pour into ice cream maker following its directions.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Let churn for ~20 minutes, will be soft serve consistency.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Transfer to reusable container. One batch almost fills two 1 quart plastic containers.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Store sealed in freezer. Use within a month or two.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ingredients:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 cup organic cocoa powder
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 cup organic granulated sugar
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1/2 teaspoon kosher salt (or to taste)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 cup cold water
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 tablespoon vanilla extract

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Directions:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In a medium saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, salt (if desired). Whisk in the water and whisk over medium heat until boiling, stirring constantly.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Continue boiling 3 – 4 minutes. The mixture may still be thin (it thickens more once cool).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Remove from heat and whisk in the vanilla. Cool.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Store syrup in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator. The syrup should keep, refrigerated, for about a month.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dog treats
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We used to buy our dog treats but we switched to making our own to eliminate plastic bag and container waste. We do still buy our dog food in large 30 lbs plastic bags but are searching for a place to buy dog food in bulk in our own containers. We reuse the dog food bags as strong waterproof bags to carry stuff in our steel bicycle baskets. Turning them inside out makes them all white on the outside plus the little grease still stuck to the bag is then on the outside and the printed cleaner side is on the inside. These bags are tough and by folding over the tops and clipping with a binder clip they keep everything dry even in a heavy rain -- almost as good as expensive camping dry bags.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Treat recipe #1 below is very fast for mass production. #2 is somewhat slower but gluten free.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Super Easy Dog Treats #1
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Makes about 3 liters (~1600) treats.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ingredients:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5 cups whole wheat flour
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4 eggs
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 can of pumpkin (15 oz can)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4 tablespoons peanut butter
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 teaspoon salt
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Directions:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Stir together the flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, salt, and cinnamon in a large bowl.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Add a little water if needed to make dough workable, but dough should be dry and stiff.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Roll dough into a rectangular ~1/4-inch-thick sheet on a large floured surface.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The sheet should end up being about 20"x20" or so, no need to be exact.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Using a rolling pizza cutter slice into narrow strips about 1/2" wide.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then slice again at right angle to cut into 1/2" squares.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Using large rectangular metal spatula, transfer sliced dough onto 2 large cooking sheets - no need to separate but needs to be single layer.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Bake in oven until crisp, about 40 minutes.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Store in an airtight container (freeze what you cannot use in a few months).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can break the treats apart after baking them or as you use them.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Super Easy Dog Treats #2
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Makes about 1.5 liters (~400) treats
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ingredients:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2 cups rolled oats
1 tablespoon granular chicken bullion
1 egg
1/2 cup water
Vegetable oil to grease sheet pans
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Directions:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Add 2 cups oats and bullion to medium mixing bowl. Using big spoon mix well. Mix in water and egg.
Using big spoon press to 1/4-inch thick sheet on inside of mixing bowl. Let stand a few minutes to firm up.
Meanwhile pour dollop of oil and spread evenly on 2 cooking sheets.
Using 2 tiny spoons, scoop tiny portions of mixture onto cooking sheets (ours are usually about 1/2 inch in diameter)
Bake for 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
Store in an airtight container (freeze if you need to store for longer than a couple months).
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Given my experience with recipe #1, it is possible that #2 could be done in the same fashion using a pizza cutter but I have not tried this yet -- the dough is wetter & stickier for #2.
Lets get directly to the purpose. Nobody has compensated me to check you. You don't know me and you're most likely thinking why you are getting this mail?

In fact, I placed a software on the X videos (porno) site and guess what, you visited this site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were viewing videos, your internet browser started working as a Remote Desktop with a key logger which provided me access to your screen and also web cam. Immediately after that, my software program collected your entire contacts from your Messenger, social networks, and e-mailaccount. Next I created a double video. 1st part displays the video you were viewing (you've got a good taste lmao), and next part displays the recording of your webcam, yeah it is you.

There are a pair of solutions. Shall we go through the choices in aspects:

<div class="mentions-texteditor__content" style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9); font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", "Fira Sans", Ubuntu, Oxygen, "Oxygen Sans", Cantarell, "Droid Sans", "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Lucida Grande", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div class="mentions-texteditor__content" style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9); font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", "Fira Sans", Ubuntu, Oxygen, "Oxygen Sans", Cantarell, "Droid Sans", "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Lucida Grande", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
1st choice is to dismiss this message. Consequently, I am going to send your video clip to almost all of your contacts and just consider about the disgrace you will get. Not to mention should you be in a romantic relationship, how it would affect?

<div class="mentions-texteditor__content" style="background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9); font-family: -apple-system, system-ui, system-ui, "Segoe UI", Roboto, "Helvetica Neue", "Fira Sans", Ubuntu, Oxygen, "Oxygen Sans", Cantarell, "Droid Sans", "Apple Color Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Emoji", "Segoe UI Symbol", "Lucida Grande", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

Number two alternative should be to give me $3000. We will think of it as a donation. As a result, I most certainly will right away discard your video footage. You could continue your daily life like this never happened and you are never going to hear back again from me.

Should you are planning on going to the police, anyway, this mail can not be traced back to me. I have dealt with my steps. I am also not attempting to ask you for money a huge amount, I simply prefer to be compensated. You now have one day in order to make the payment. I have a special pixel in this mail, and right now I know that you have read through this email. If I do not get the BitCoins, I will definately send out your video recording to all of your contacts including members of your family, co-workers, etc. Nevertheless, if I do get paid, I will destroy the video immidiately. This is the non-negotiable offer and so do not waste my time & yours by replying to this e-mail. If you need evidence, reply Yes! & I will certainly send your video to your 8 friends.

No need to carry the smelly poop with you. :-)

Halloween is quite a challenge for zero wasters with many unhealthy treats packaged in wrappers that are difficult to reuse or recycle. So instead our household prepares our own treats in compostable/recyclable food grade wax envelopes. We also staple a note to each one so the recipient knows exactly what they are getting, where it came from, and how to properly reuse/recycle the note and packaging. And we have a nonfood option as well for kids who have food allergies.

Here is the note we gave out this year with our treats:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the face of great "can do" customer service as well as sustainability. This is Vince the meat manager of the Safeway at 20620 W Homestead Rd, Cupertino, CA 95014. Vince can tare your container (so you only pay for the contents) and put any of their meats into it that otherwise would go into their store packaging. Please bring your own clean container and say hi to him at the butcher counter and thank him for reducing disposable plastic waste. Thanks!

BTW, in case you get someone not as experienced as Vince at the butcher counter, here is what they need to do to enter the tare for your container (the order here is important):
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Weigh container first to establish its weight

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Take container off scale

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Enter product code

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hit tare button twice in upper left corner of keypad and then enter the tare weight obtained in step 1

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Put container on scale

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Notice correct tare and net total weight at or very near zero

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Put product in container

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Print label and apply to container

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Notice that correct tare is also printed on label

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can buy any of Safeway's meats this way.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">BTW, at Zanotto's the process is simpler:

Enter product code first

Put empty container on scale

Press tare button

Add product to container

Print label and apply to container.

It is an updated Olive Oil version of the Canola oil version I did back in 2008. I've determined that olive oil is better than canola oil for a variety of reasons (local, sustainable, healthy). It now also includes making your own brown sugar instead of buying pre-made brown sugar.

Ingredients

1 cup - Organic Unrefined Sugar (instead of brown sugar)
1 tbsp - Organic Molasses (instead of brown sugar)

1 cup - Olive Oil (instead of butter, my current favorite is California Olive Ranch Extra Virgin)
2 tbsp -Water (instead of butter)
(Alternatively use 1 cup of softened organic butter)

2 tsp - Vanilla Extract (either natural or artificial)
2 - Large Organic Eggs

2 cups - Organic Rolled Oats
1 1/2 cups - Organic Whole Wheat Flour
1 tsp - Baking Powder, Double-acting, Sodium Aluminum Sulfate
1 tsp - Ground Cinnamon
1/2 tsp - Salt

12 ounces (0.75 lbs) - Organic Chocolate Chips, Semi-Sweet

Optional: Also add some pecans or walnuts, up to 1 cup.

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F.

A stand or other electric mixer works best. Otherwise this is very, very good exercise for your arm. In a large bowl mix sugar and molasses until well blended (this turns it into brown sugar, it takes quite a lot of mixing to evenly distribute the molasses). Add oil and mix. Add water, vanilla, eggs and mix. Add flour, oats, baking powder, cinnamon, salt. Mix until well blended. Add chocolate chips (and optionally pecans) and mix until evenly distributed.

Drop tablespoons of cookie dough 1.5 inches apart onto baking sheets (greasing with a light coat of olive oil is optional). Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Let stand on baking sheets for ~2-4 minutes before scraping cookies off baking sheet with spatula. Put on racks or plates to cool if desired.

Makes about 48 cookies.

Notes

The sugar, flour, oats, chocolate chips, pecans, salt, and cinnamon can be purchased from Whole Foods and possibly other supermarkets in bulk (bring your own container if possible to eliminate disposable packaging -- alternatively flour and sugar are typically sold in recyclable paper). Whole Foods and some other supermarkets also sell molasses in glass containers and 3 liter California Olive Ranch Extra Virgin Olive Oil (or other olive oils) in metal containers. Even if you don't use organic ingredients for some or all of the above, it still is very healthy and minimizes trash. Double check to make sure the olive oil you are buying is really olive oil as many commercial brands have mixed in cheaper oils.
Plus in addition to these being zero-waste, they are healthier for you too. Here is my favorite easy whole wheat waffle recipe:

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

1 large egg

1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk

1/3 cup vegetable oil

Directions:

Preheat waffle iron while making the waffle batter.

Whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and oil.

Mix together the wet and dry ingredients, stirring just until combined. The batter may be a bit lumpy.

Cook the waffles as directed in the instructions that came with your waffle iron. For my Cuisinart waffle maker I cook until the steam mostly stops.

Yield: 6 round standard 6.5" waffles or 3 round deep-pocket Belgian-style 7" waffles.

I get my whole wheat flour, sugar, and salt in bulk in my own reusable containers from Whole Foods but even from a regular grocery store they are usually packed in paper which is pretty close to zero waste. I currently use California Olive Ranch extra virgin olive oil as my main oil -- grown and made in California near where I live and certified to be real olive oil (many other olive oils have been shown to be falsely labeled, google around for the latest on this). My baking powder is just from a local supermarket. My eggs and milk are usually organic from a local supermarket or a farmers market. While I can get milk in glass bottles it is somewhat more expensive and pretty heavy/fragile so I usually get standard milk containers that I recycle. Paper egg cartons can be recycled/composted or reused if you get eggs from a farmers market as I sometimes do.

Enjoy!Tim Oeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11950416117686776062noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7715358100843711353.post-45966855305106869922017-03-23T07:00:00.000-07:002017-10-14T13:02:31.274-07:00Why buy syrup when you can make it?Here is a super easy and tasty syrup recipe. I use this syrup on pancakes and waffles and as an ingredient to my favorite granola recipe. It is much cheaper than store bought commercial syrup and has zero high fructose corn syrup. While I love natural maple syrup, it is extremely expensive and uses a lot of fossil fuel to ship it to where I live.

Ingredients:

1 cup water

2 cups granulated sugar (white or unrefined)

1 tablespoon molasses

1 tablespoon maple flavored extract

Directions:

Bring the water, sugar, and molasses to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat.

Take off heat and stir in the maple extract.

Let cool until no longer hot.

Store in a sealed glass mason jar in refrigerator (since it does not contain preservatives like store purchased varieties).

I buy my sugar in bulk in my own reusable container from Whole Foods. However, even from a regular grocery store, white sugar is usually packaged in paper. This greatly reduces the disposable plastic from buying syrup in plastic bottles. The least expensive high quality maple flavored extract I've found was at https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008OGD194 but availability varies.

Currently we take our black 35 gallon trash toter to the curb once every three months. In 2015 it was usually once every two weeks. Our current goal is once per year.

Our green yard waste container goes out about once every two months (same as in 2015).

We take our green/blue recycling split cart toter (mixed paper on one side, glass/metal/plastic containers on the other) to the curb about once every two months -- used to be every two weeks like the trash toter but we have reduced our recycling as well as our trash stream since we are very focused on Reduce and Reuse.

This post expands on my previous one No More Disposable Plastic!

Some places like farmers markets, butchers, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Zanotto's, and Starbucks understand the value of reusable containers (saves both them and you money, reduces waste, helps environment) but others do not yet. If we all keep pushing, this will become increasingly accepted.

While cardboard ice cream containers are compostable in some municipal composting programs (but not in home composting), composting them is still more waste than using a reusable container. Plus the cardboard ice cream containers do have some plastic in them.

I am currently waiting for responses from Baskin Robbins and Cold Stone Creamery to see if they will allow me to bring my own quart containers to their stores to get fresh packed ice cream. Cold Stone also makes its ice cream at their stores. I've had some shops say I could bring my own container while another said I couldn't. This ice cream is a about the same cost as Ben & Jerry ice cream and similar quality.

While I try to avoid plastic as much as possible, reusable polypropylene (#5 plastic) containers are my current favorites for shopping since they are inexpensive, light, nest compactly, do not break easily, can be frozen, recycle reasonably well when they do wear out, and are dishwasher safe. Glass is more recyclable but it is voluminous, heavy and breaks too easily. Stainless steel containers are very expensive and hard to find in the right sizes.

I do avoid microwaving in plastic because it can melt and it increases the risk of chemicals moving from the plastic into my food.

My current favorite reusable plastic containers are:

Glad Entree 3-1/8 cups containers -- They are square, compact, readily available at grocery stores, inexpensive, a great size for a sandwich or an individual portion for lunch or dinner or restaurant left overs. They also have a reasonably good seal. At Safeway they are listed as "disposable" but I've gotten about as many years of use from these as I have heavier plastic polypropylene containers.

Glad Containers Family Size Square 13 cups -- These are a larger version of the above and great for bulk foods (cereals, etc) as well as larger portions. They fit 3 pints of strawberries well when I visit the farmer's market. Prices for these at Safeway tend to be less than what Amazon charges.

Reditainer Extreme Freeze Deli Food Containers with Lids, 32-Ounce -- a standard round quart size that seals and freezes well. I hope to use these when getting ice cream in the future.

5/9/2016 Update #1: I found out that both Basking Robbins and Cold Stone Creamery allowed me to bring my own container.

5/9/2016 Update #2: California Food Code (a derivative of the US Food Code) explicitly allows consumers to bring their own containers to be refilled! Yay!
If you have not already, please see Wall-E for what our earth may eventually look like.

We must do as much as possible to greatly reduce the use of plastic!

Here is a seagoing bird that died from ingestion of plastic in the middle of the Pacific:

From: http://ecowatch.com/2013/05/28/california-plastic-pollution-policy-tangled-up-committee/

See also http://www.nrdc.org/oceans/plastic-ocean/ and many other sources you can find by googling. And read the fantastic book Plastic-Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too.

So my household is eliminating our need for plastic bags and other disposable plastic. No more hard copy newspaper with its plastic bag (see my separate post about my newspaper). No more disposable plastic grocery bags (thank you for the local plastic bag ban -- now we must make sure it becomes a reality for all of California!). No more produce bags. No more plastic bread bags. No more plastic garbage bags (see http://ecopractice.blogspot.com/2016/01/current-trash-run-rate-take-out-trash.html). No more cereal boxes with their plastic bags. No more frozen foods in plastic bags. No more styrofoam meat trays. No more plastic wrap. No more ziploc bags (except for the quart size reusable one we need for airline travel).

I'm now using muslin cotton bags for our produce, bulk cereal, crackers, bread, chocolate, and more:

I transfer contents to more durable / air tight containers at home. I may start to bring some of the durable containers to stores and/or farmers market but the bags are convenient, compact, and easy to use.

For meat and fish I'm now bringing my washable and reusable containers to the butcher so they place the meat directly into these containers:

This even eliminates the need for butcher paper which is sometimes compostable (waxed) but sometimes not so much (plastic lined).

While my reusable containers are currently plastic (I'm using up my existing supply first), as these wear out I intend to replace them with glass ones that are freezer, oven, and microwave safe. My current top candidate is: Glasslock 18-Piece Assorted Oven Safe Container Set. I may also try mason jars and stainless steel containers, we'll see.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: decimal; vertical-align: baseline;">

Matter (material):

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

Big win! Only using reusables, no more trash or very little plastic recycling (which is really downcycling and has lots of side effects). The plastic containers I use are sold as "disposables" but I've used them for many years. Eventually they wear out and need to be recycled but they are polypropylene (plastic #5) which is one of the safest plastics (doesn't leach and generally easy to recycle).

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: decimal; vertical-align: baseline;">

Energy

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

Big win. No more disposables to manufacture, transport to me, and transport to dump/recycling. Washing uses a bit of energy but is sustainable.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

Freezing takes a lot of energy, now we are eating more fresh foods instead.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

More local food that uses less energy to transport.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: decimal; vertical-align: baseline;">

Time

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

Neutral once you change your habits. Just need to be prepared and have your reusables on hand. I visit the market more frequently but my shops are shorter. Plus gives me a chance to say hi to local neighbors too. I'm also now going to our local farmers market so I can even eliminate plastic twist ties often found on grocery produce.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: decimal; vertical-align: baseline;">

Space

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

Big win. No more disposable plastics clogging landfills or filling recycling/trash trucks. We already had space for reusable containers that we now can just use more.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: decimal; vertical-align: baseline;">

Money

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

Overall seems to net out. Sometime costs a bit more to get fresh food vs packaged. But no more buying plastic bags and plastic wrap. As more people switch to it, bulk foods will end up cheaper as less waste will result in less cost.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: decimal; vertical-align: baseline;">

Environment/Health/Life

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

HUGE win. Eliminating the need for plastic is really, really huge. Plastic survives hundreds of years and is poisoning our ocean and land as well as people as it comes back around in our food chain.

<li dir="ltr" style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.66px; line-height: 23.46px; list-style-type: lower-alpha; vertical-align: baseline;">

Fresh local food is better for you and tastes better as well.

However after a lifetime of enjoying a printed newspaper, I've kicked the paper habit. We no longer have a paper newspaper delivered along with its rubber band and (often) plastic bag.

Instead I now get an electronic edition on my Apple iPad each morning. The delivery interface has improved tremendously from the early days of e-publishing, it was a surprisingly pleasant switch. I really like the interface to the newspaper on my iPad:

I:

can still skim/see the whole page and its context (the resolution on the iPad is much better than the picture above),

tap on an article to read it in a bigger/easier/clearer font,

can zoom into pictures,

navigate easily and quickly to links,

quickly get to past editions as well as other Bay Area Newsgroup papers,

no longer need to worry about non-delivery of papers (happens a few times a year),

can now have the computer search for me instead of having to flip pages,

and more...

This has been a win all around for me although old habits die hard.

Big win. Electrons are cheap to deliver.

Big win. Don't need to go out to driveway to retrieve, call if it got lost, or suspend when we go on trips. Can get it on iPad or computer wherever I am if I want it.

Big win. iPad is very compact, newspapers took up space inside and in recycling bin.

Big win. Cost for the electronic edition is about one third the cost of the print edition. I already owned the iPad for other reasons.

Big win. No longer killing as many trees, recycling still has an environmental toll. Rubber bands can be reused but need to find someone who needs them. I usually gave them back to my paper delivery person which took some time and money to do. Eliminating the need for plastic bags is huge. Plastic survives hundreds of years and is poisoning our ocean and land as well as people as it comes back around in our food chain.

It works by using a funnel-like attachment on your sewer cleanout so you can drop the dog poop directly into your sewer line without necessarily using any water!

Here is a picture of me doing this:

This is neater and easier than putting the dog poop in a toilet to flush. Saves water too.

The sewer cleanout accessory we use is the Doggie Doo Drain Dog Waste Sewer Line Attachment.

The reusable device we now use to pick up poop on walks (instead of using a plastic bag) is Nature's Miracle Jaw Scoop. It is easy to carry and holds the poop in the little bucket its jaws create. The medium size model can hold dozens of small poops or a couple of big poops from a big dog (we have little dogs). There is also a jumbo size if you need it.

If the poop is solid and not sticky, no water is needed as the poop just rolls down into the sewer. The poop in the sewer line gets flushed when water inside the house enters the sewer line. If the poop is sticky, using a little water from a nearby hose can rinse it down the funnel as well as rinse off the pooper scooper. Still less water used than a toilet flush.

The sewer system is the best way to handle both dog poop and human poop. I confirmed this with Sunnyvale waste management (both solid waste and sewage departments) as well as numerous online sources. Having trash sorters run into poop in the trash is not so pleasant (all trash in Sunnyvale is sorted to try to reclaim recyclables residents mistakenly put in the trash). Please note that cat poop is more problematic (toxoplasmosis survives sewage treatment and is fatal to sea otters in San Francisco Bay).

Note that our sewer cleanout is located in a great spot near our house so it is very convenient to use for dog waste disposal plus we can "smell" our sewer backing up outside before it backs up inside. This location of cleanout allows blockages to be more easily removed between our house and the street. Sewer cleanouts near the street probably won't work as well for either this dog poop disposal method or to allow the sewer line between your house and the street to be cleared easily.

Here are some closer pictures of our sewer cleanout. The funnel was a snap to install. It screws into the same threads that the black inner cap uses.
One time investment of about $50-60 for funnel and a scooper. Disposing of poop this way is much healthier, safer, and better for the environment than having it go thru sorting and then entombing in a landfill. We will run out of landfills. Also eliminating the disposable plastic is extremely important as plastic from bags lasts hundreds of years and eventually poisons our creeks, rivers, oceans, and us. Sewer and septic systems are much more effective and efficient at handling human and dog waste than other methods.

We currently have the smallest trash service possible in Sunnyvale. We've made some huge leaps in waste efficiency (many of which I still need to blog about). Again our goal is to get as close to to zero waste as possible for our household by the end of 2016.

We now have a small 2 quart black bucket that collects the trash for our entire house. Here is a picture of it next to our 2 little dogs:

And a picture of it next to our indoor kitchen compost and recycling collection bins:

The liners in the compost and recycling bins you see are certified compostable. The one used for recycling is rotated and becomes the one for compost after we empty the recycling into our outdoor recycling bin. The compost one makes it easier to toss the collected compost into a larger commercial composting facility and then the compost bin gets a new liner and becomes the one we collect recycling in. Here are the 13 gallon liners we currently use: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004V5XCSC

We no longer use any plastic trash bags. Our recycling and trash are now pretty "clean" since all the messy organics end up in the compost bin.

When Sunnyvale starts picking up food scrap compostables directly we may move to zero liners saving that resource and expense. Our outdoor trash, recycling, and yard waste bins require no liners.Tim Oeyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11950416117686776062noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7715358100843711353.post-34991886900330413882016-01-20T18:00:00.000-08:002016-01-20T18:00:07.134-08:00Paper Ice Cream Containers
